Dear talented Texas Junior,

For many years now, the Texas Championship has been a closed event, for only those over 2000, with a long time control, 40/2 SD/1. This is only natural; a small section with a long time control is necessary for real competition. If there is any hope of determining a true champion, the tournament must be conducted in this manner. However the Texas High School State Championship has never been this way and does not look to change anytime soon. Instead it has a relatively short time control, G/60, and lots of rounds, 7, over two days. This situation makes it difficult to determine a legitimate champion. This year at the state tournament, there was a tie from first to third place and another from fourth to eleventh! Certainly the time has come for an opportunity to break these ties and have a true state championship.

Now top Texas Juniors have an opportunity to compete fairly amongst each other at the Texas Junior Invitational! A smaller field and a longer, more traditional time control will make the difference. This will truly be the tournament that many frustrated juniors have wanted for a long time.

In deciding who to invite to this event we were careful not to discriminate against anyone that deserves to compete among the best. Certainly, highly rated players who have played well in their chess careers deserve to compete, so we invited all juniors rated over 1600. We also recognize that juniors are usually very underrated even compared to each other, so we decided to invite those that have played well in this year’s TCA scholastic tournaments. With this in mind, we have invited all of those that finished in the top ten at the Texas High School State Championship and all Regional High School Champions. Finally, we invited all state champions from Primary through High School.

You obviously meet one of the requirements and are considered amongst the best in Texas and are therefore extended an invitation to play in our prestigious tournament.

Because the tournament is held at the Dallas Chess Club and TCA is providing financial support, we are able to offer prizes comparable to considerably larger tournaments. Furthermore, unlike most tournaments, we, the organizers, are not making any money from this tournament. We feel that we have designed a tournament that will appeal to the promising Texas Juniors with a love of the game. We hope that all of this will encourage participation and that the competition will be fierce.

Thank you,

Enrique Rios & Patrick Bloom
